Team Coaching for Law Firms and Legal Departments

Every Team Has an Inner Game

“The collective intelligence and performance of most groups is well below the average intelligence and performance of the members.”

Peter Senge

Every law firm and legal department has talented attorneys.

Not every law firm and legal department has a high-performing leadership team or practice groups that operate at their full potential.

The difference isn’t intelligence.

It’s how aligned the team is.

The strongest practice groups and leadership teams communicate openly, navigate conflict constructively, fully trust one another, and remain aligned around shared priorities—even when the pressure is high and the way forward is not clear.

Those qualities don’t happen by accident.

They must be intentionally caused and maintained over time.

When Great Lawyers Don’t Make a Great Team

Most teams don’t struggle because people lack talent. Well-meaning, smart teams struggle because of invisible dynamics:

  • Important conversations never happen.
  • Conflict is avoided—or handled poorly.
  • Different personalities pull in different directions.
  • Trust erodes.
  • People protect their own practice instead of advancing the firm’s shared vision.
  • Meetings become updates instead of meaningful decisions.
  • Everyone is busy.
  • People agree without being truly aligned.

These are not failures. They are understandable challenges that flow from the team’s inner game.

Conflict Isn’t the Problem

Most teams don’t suffer because they have conflict. They suffer because they don’t know how to navigate conflict effectively.

Conversations that matter most are oftentimes the ones everyone avoids in an effort to “keep the peace”:

  • Performance issues
  • Partnership disagreements
  • Competing priorities
  • Unspoken frustrations
  • Different visions for the future

Avoiding these conversations almost never supports the organization. To the contrary, it costs the organization in terms of performance and reduces team members’ engagement with the organization and with each other.

Healthy conflict, approached with skill and trust, creates stronger relationships, better decisions, and greater commitment to shared goals.

As a former attorney and mediator, I have decades of experience helping teams create the psychological safety necessary to have difficult conversations honestly—and productively.

What Team Coaching Makes Possible

Team coaching helps practice groups and leadership teams become more than the sum of their individual members.

Together, we’ll strengthen your team’s ability to:

  • Build deep trust
  • Communicate with clarity and candor
  • Navigate conflict productively
  • Make better collective decisions
  • Break down silos
  • Increase accountability
  • Leverage the unique strengths of every member
  • Stay aligned around shared priorities
  • Create a culture where people thrive

When teams change the way they think together, they change the way they perform together.

My Approach

Over more than twenty-five years as an attorney, mediator, executive coach, and facilitator, I’ve helped clients navigate thousands of difficult conversations and resolve conflicts many believed were impossible, frequently in the midst of high emotion and financial complexity.

Rather than simply facilitate meetings, I partner with teams to see and understand underlying patterns that influence how they communicate, make decisions, and relate to one another, well beyond what is obvious.

Depending on your team’s goals, our work may include leadership assessments, facilitated team coaching conversations, strategic planning sessions, conflict resolution, and practical development tools that strengthen collaboration and alignment long after our work together concludes.

The outcome is a healthier, happier, more effective team – not simply a successful meeting.
